Portland Man Accused Of Drunk Driving And Other Charges
36-year-old Benjamin V. Reicks of Portland is facing several charges including drunk driving, reckless driving and endangering another person after a crash that took place on Interstate 5 near Cottage Grove on Friday.
According to police reports, Reicks is accused of causing a two-car crash that resulted in the injury of 67-year-old Patricia Lee of Auburn, Wash. Reicks was also injured in the crash.
A news release published by the Oregon State Police stated that the incident took place around 12:30 a.m. when Reicks was heading south on the freeway. He was driving a 1999 Honda Civic which rear-ended a 2012 Kia Soul. The vehicle which was rear-ended was being driven by Lee.
As a result of the impact, the Civic went off the highway, into an ODOT exit sign before it landed on its top.
Emergency personnel responded to the incident and took both drivers to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield with non life-threatening injuries.
OSP published a news release after the incident reminding people of the increased danger on roads during Labor Day weekend. The news release stated that Labor Day weekend is the second-deadliest major holiday period for highway motorists in Oregon. In efforts to increase safety of drivers through the weekend, OSP plans to put all available sworn personal on the roads this holiday weekend.
